The Linux Users Group Indore, grew out of the creative energies of some of Indore’s Internet pioneers. They recognized the significance of Linux and within months held the first official meeting. On March 16, 2006 LUG Indore was born. Since then, LUG Indore has grown rapidly, providing Linux support to both new and old Linux users, helping in installing and setting up Linux on computers, and encouraging the adoption of the Linux Operating System on various colleges, both in the computer clusters and in dorm rooms. LUG Indore is a non-profit users group, whose members exchange information on the development and use of the Linux kernel and Free Software Foundation tools. Physical and online meetings are held in English and Hindi.

We promote the inclusion of Open-Standards, and Open-Source solutions where applicable. We are dedicated to educating software professionals of the choices that are available in the Open-Source community. We encourage the use and participation in Open-Source projects. We are not anti-commercial software. However, we are against the blind illusion that commercial software is always a better choice.

As the Linux Users Group , our purpose is to:

  • Support new and old Linux operating system users in Indore.

  • Provide a forum for getting support on Linux questions.

  • Help new users install their own copies of Linux, in their own way.

  • Increase awareness of the Linux operating system to Indore IT community.

As said above, physical meetings are synonymous with LUG Indore. We meet last saturday of every month. Entry is free, anyone can come and join us. So, what do we do at these meetings ?

  • Install distributions for newcomers and strangers.

  • Teach members about Linux.

  • Compare Linux to other operating systems.

  • Teach members about application software.

  • Discuss advocacy.

  • Discuss the free software / open-source movement.

Monthly Meeting : Last Saturday of every month

Time : 8 PM

Place : M-74, Trade Center, South Tukoganj, Indore.

Everyone is invited !

And even with my own personal loyalties to one distribution or another, it always amazes me how certain distributions are better suited to various users and needs. So when I set out to write a 10 Things article, it only made sense that my first one be related to choosing a Linux distribution.

Interview: How a hacker became a freedom fighter
One of the founding fathers of "free software" and an esteemed elder of the hacking community, Richard Stallman has made defending people's freedoms his life's work. That usually means supplying hackers with software and attacking copyright law. But as he tells Michael Reilly, his advocacy of personal freedoms extends to the protection of true democracy and of the human rights increasingly being trampled on in the US and elsewhere.
