  • What is Linux ?

Few basic questions related to Linux answered here. This FAQ is inspired by by David Merrill's work, with assistance and comments from Linux users all over the world. Over the years it has passed through several hands, and I'd like to recognize all the folks who have worked on it.

Special thanks are due to Matt Welsh, who moderated news:comp.os.linux.announce and news:comp.os.linux.answers, coordinated the HOWTO's and wrote substantial portions of many of them, Greg Hankins the former Linux Documentation Project HOWTO maintainer, Lars Wirzenius and Mikko Rauhala, the former and current moderators of news:comp.os.linux.announce, Marc-Michel Corsini, who wrote the original Linux FAQ, and Ian Jackson, the previous FAQ maintainer. Thanks also to Roman Maurer for his many updates and additions, especially with European Web sites, translations, and general miscellany.

Last but not least, thanks to Linus Torvalds and the other contributors to Linux for giving us something to talk about!

  • Indore Linux User Group

The Linux Users Group Indore grew out of the creative energies of some of Indore's Internet pioneers. They recognized the significance of Linux and within months held the first official meeting.

On March 16, 2005 LUG Indore was born. The atmosphere was exciting and friendly, and everyone began helping each other fix problems and learn about Linux.

LUG Indore is a non-profit users group, whose members exchange information on the development and use of the Linux kernel and Free Software Foundation tools. Physical and online meetings are held in English and Hindi. All are welcome.

Although LUG Indore is a Linux Users Group, most of what we talk about is the free and open source software (FOSS) available for Linux, not the kernel itself. There are lots of questions about integration on our Forums - it's a one of the great benefits of Open Source and Free Software.

Linux Indore maintains an introductory FAQ on Linux, free software and open source. It outlines the main concepts and explains how to get started.
