Mandriva 2009 64bit: Finally up but with issues. 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi all
As I told you earlier, I booted mandriva 2009 x86-64 but obtained a blank screen with just a cursor.
ctrl+alt+F1 and others worked so that I was able to log in to the system in text mod and GUI was not starting at all.

On some advice I saw logs and got this error
Failed to load module "via"
(Simmilar problems in other distros too indicates it is a driver bug)

so I searched google and replaced šviaš in Xorg.config with švesaš externally (i.e. from another linux distribution)

When after that I booted mandriva 2009 I again saw blank screen with a mouse pointer this time.
Thankfully, ctrl+alt+backspace yeilded result and I was now able to see the login screen.

So I logged in and everything was great except some issues

1. I am unable to set the correct refresh rate for my system.
2. performance problem. maybe due to vesa but what can I do?
3. As I edited Xorg.config externally the control center still thinks that my card is via.
4. Can anyone tell me how to file the bugs? I have a file named report.bug.gz in my root directory which shows some errors.

Everything else is great
Good style of KDE but I think theme is not so good.
Installed very fast almost in 30 mins with all desktop environments and other packages except servers.
Boots very fast in less than 10 seconds from grub to login screen.

Now I think I will try the via driver once again coz now I know the solution and will play with it a bit.

Ya and the install.log also showed some problems which I was unable to understand.

Apperantly rpmdrake was not installed
May be the package on DVD is buggy

So I installed latest version of via unichrome driver from the net
which also installed rpmdrake and urpmi as dependencies along with two other packages
I restarted the X server and now it shows correct resolution and refresh rate.
there is also an option to install experimental drivers from via which i will try after some time
Right now, exploring the system...

10 Things to Consider When Choosing a Linux Distribution
I can’t begin to tell you how many people over the years I have consulted with about choosing a Linux distribution. And even with my own personal loyalties to one distribution or another, it always amazes me how certain distributions are better suited to various users and needs. So when I set out to write a 10 Things article, it only made sense that my first one be related to choosing a Linux distribution.

Interview: How a hacker became a freedom fighter
One of the founding fathers of "free software" and an esteemed elder of the hacking community, Richard Stallman has made defending people's freedoms his life's work. That usually means supplying hackers with software and attacking copyright law. But as he tells Michael Reilly, his advocacy of personal freedoms extends to the protection of true democracy and of the human rights increasingly being trampled on in the US and elsewhere.
